Abstract | The number of students studying English has declined sharply within the last several decades, due to some extent to the economy and the belief that an English degree will prepare you to work as a teacher at best and a barista at worst. But despite these beliefs regarding the value of an education in English literature, the degree equips students with valuable communication and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in a wide variety of fields and positions. The main problem facing the field is marketability -- the way that the field is portrayed to both potential students and the general public. |
