"This research volume addresses the topic of educational inequality from a global perspective. This book brings together an international group of scholars who examine how well a sample of city school systems from around the world are preparing young people, particularly poor and minority students, with the skills needed for further study and work, and life more broadly. While test scores have been centre stage in international comparisons historically, there has been growing recognition of the effects that education has on the development of interpersonal and intrapersonal skills-labelled social-emotional or non-cognitive skills-that affect the success of students in school and success in the labour market (OECD, 2015; National Research Council, 2012). The book also investigates the extent and nature of inequality in these skills across different populations of students and across schooling systems. Some students, usually from poor and minority backgrounds, miss out in every system; yet in some systems the gaps are large, while in others they are relatively small.
