Abstract"As I am writing this, we are in year three of a global pandemic. The pandemic's impact on education is already emerging and I suspect will be fodder for numerous research papers in the coming years. One aspect of the impact is teacher "fallout" from the profession. Teachers are leaving the profession in record numbers. Retirement, early retirement, and even beginning to mid-career professionals have decided to leave teaching. I worry about this. So, how do we attract vibrant, creative, and intelligent individuals to this most important profession? How do we retain the many outstanding teachers who may be considering leaving this profession? Smart people need to be engaged and create. Instead of writing "scripted curriculum" for a teacher to follow or devise new testing strategies to hold teachers accountable, our focus should be on strategies to engage novice teachers in using their academic content and pedagogical skills to create opportunities (curriculum) in which their students may surprise everyone. Teachers become artists in developing story lines for their evolving curriculum that fosters student passion for learning while mentoring their students. This approach not only engages students but will keep teachers intellectually engaged in their profession. The core of the struggle between "why I want to teach" and the parameters that are both in place in schools as well as inflicted on teachers often leads to teachers many exiting the profession within 5 years. The focus of this book examines, through personal essays, why I went into this profession and what sustained me through 4 decades. It starts with being fired during my student teaching practicum and ends with me being hired by an Ivy League university as their faculty director of science and teacher education programs. At first glance, these essays may seem like an unkempt time travel journey as they flow between two careers - one as a high school teacher and the other as a university professor. Or, too specific to offer any pragmatic advice for preservice and teachers just beginning their professional careers. However, I argue that four essential traits - passion, flexibility, building community developing intellectual engagement - are needed, regardless of ones' teaching discipline in the practice of teaching. They need to be the rudder that guides them through the uncharted waters they will navigate, and it will ultimately sustain their fire that making a difference in children's lives. The format I offer are personal essays and reflections built around these four cornerstones of good teaching. Each cornerstone contains several essays that relate to that theme. While there are many books written about educational pedagogy as well as methodology, this collection is about why individuals go into teaching and what sustains their passion and fire in the belly to continue. As true of any profession, there is an associated sea of acronyms and specialized vocabulary that may be unfamiliar to some readers. The appendix includes a short glossary of professional education organizations and terms as well as a methods / pedagogy matrix for designing curriculum. My intended audience includes preservice teachers, beginning teachers, experienced teacher-leaders who coach new teachers, and all those interested in how education happens. Let's roll up our sleeves and get started"--Provided by publisher.
