| Abstract | "As we know, social emotional learning (SEL) is often identified as a top 3 priority for K-12 schools in the coming years. One of the main challenges with SEL in schools lies in implementation. Whether the school incorporates daily lessons, uses advisory, trains all staff, or adopts a curriculum, having a process and monitoring that process is essential for change. In this book Jennifer describes why and how coaching can be the answer to successful implementation. Schools need SEL coaches to effectively support the real systems change. School leaders have good intentions but often lack the time, resources, support, and expertise to create change. In many school communities, understanding how to select and integrate intentional supports that help staff deal with the uncertainty of starting something new and complex is a barrier to SEL implementation. In addition, the skills that SEL coaches need to effectively manage a schoolwide implementation are not currently taught in pre-service or higher education training programs. Effective SEL coaches should have the ability to lead, have strong communication skills, provide data support, conduct professional development and train other adults, coach throughout the system, and team with educational stakeholders and community members. The SEL coach can be the lever to transform practices into processes, an idea into an action plan, and goals into outcomes. Along with describing the research on SEL and the role of coaching, the author delves into topics such as school culture, getting staff ready for change, teamwork, and working with communities and families.
