AbstractMost discussions of youth behavior focus on the small group engaged in high-risk activities, ignoring the majority of youth who are developing in prosocial ways. This article provides a rationale for reversing this self-fulfilling prophecy which creates the impression that problem behavior is the norm. It describes the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) as part of an epidemiological surveillance system that was established in 1988 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help monitor the prevalence of behaviors that not only influence adolescent health, but also put youth at risk for the most significant health and social problems that can occur during adolescence and adulthood. The YRBS high school survey was first implemented at the national level in 1990. Since that time CDC has sponsored biennial national and state surveys. As is true with nearly all surveys, the YRBS data is published in such a manner that the prevalence of each risk, or undesirable behavior, is reported. Strengthified YRBS data is powerful in reducing the misperception gap between youth norms and actual youth behavior. The authors hypothesize the existence of another perception gap between adults' perception of youth behavior and actual youth behavior. It would be interesting to study the social and psychological consequences of adults' misperception gap regarding youth behavior. In that research, the strengthified YRBS data could potentially be used as a social intervention tool. (ERIC).
