| Abstract | A traditional understanding in art is that, in order to draw the human figure, the artist must first understand its structure and inner workings. This project was first developed for middle-school art students in an attempt to help them better understand figure drawing. In subsequent years, it has been amended and adapted to integrate with other content areas such as Mexican culture (Day of the Dead), famous artists (Jose Posada), human anatomy, systems, and structures. It has also been successfully taught to students as young as fifth grade. Despite the project's versatility, however, it has never been used as a Halloween project, perhaps because the connection of the skeleton to the holiday is too obvious. Having students make connections to other content areas and removing the skeleton from its traditional and familiar context challenges them to use higher-order thinking skills.
