Abstract | Now, perhaps more than ever, communicating with legislators is essential to safeguarding the education profession and promoting the well-being of the children and families with whom teachers work. Yet, this task is not always an easy one, primarily because legislators and teachers work in different environments and speak different professional languages (Bogenschneider, Olson, Mills, & Linney, 2006; Friese & Bogenschneider, 2009). The purpose of this article is to provide readers with help in making their voices heard when communicating with legislators. This guidance reflects the lessons the authors have learned during their years teaching family policy, preparing and supervising students to serve as legislative aides during the annual Georgia General Assembly, and working on projects aimed at promoting child- and family-friendly policies. A list of references and resources is included. (Contains 3 figures.) (ERIC). |
