Abstract | The purpose of this study was to use a convenience sample drawn from two BSW programs to obtain some preliminary descriptive statistics on the number of undergraduate social work majors who were working while enrolled in classes, the number of hours they worked each week on average over the semesters, and the extent to which the students perceived that their employment, or their parental and familial responsibilities, interfered with their studies. The authors used this cross-sectional, correlational design to test the prediction that average number of hours worked each week and perceived interference of employment upon academic studies would be inversely related to overall grade point average. The results of this study suggest that working half-time while pursuing a full course load is typical for this sample of undergraduate social work students. Average number of hours worked and perceived work interference with studies were associated with lower overall grade point average. (Contains 7 tables.) (ERIC). |
