Abstract | In this article, the author talks about the registers of the religious and focuses on the Terence H. McLaughlin lecture 2010. He starts from MacIntyre's observation that people live in a world characterized by a vocabulary of value whose purchase on life is no longer authentically experienced: "MacIntyre's diagnosis of the impoverished condition relates to the severing of such vocabularies from the communities that gave them meaning, and in many respects he understands the continuities and commonalities of those communities in "religious" terms." He claims that there is religion of the kind that, in the not so distant past, structured the lives of so many in Europe, now no longer seems an option. He continues with focusing on the "local" and refers to two examples (a non-married vice-principal who becomes pregnant and a school principal who has been deserted by his wife but enters into a relationship with another woman who has been married previously).
