AbstractThe experience that will be described in this paper is based on work carried out during the Chance Project, an experimental programme designed to re-integrate teenage drop-outs from difficult areas of the inner city into mainstream school. The Project, which has been running in Naples, southern Italy, since 1998, comprises three school centres which are set up in state schools in deprived areas of the city: the old city centre and two outlying districts. Each centre has a co-ordinator and a headmaster and accepts 30 children a year. The idea behind the project is based on an experimental approach which has firm foundations in the school system itself. The students are supervised and supported until they get their middle school diploma, which marks the completion of compulsory schooling in Italy. Children are referred to the project by social services, who are responsible for intervening in such cases as well as ensuring that the rulings of the Court for Minors are enforced. The authors have worked on this project since its foundation as psychotherapists for adolescents and have led work discussion groups aimed at supporting professionals involved in the project. In this article, the authors have chosen to focus their attention on the roles of two professional figures, "social mothers" and educators, who work alongside the team of teachers within the project. Educators represent a professional category which is widespread in the national context and whose tasks are in some ways parallel to those of learning mentors. They provide various activities including home tutoring, academic support and inclusion in play and recreational activities. Social mothers represent a very different kind of figure, not just for the Chance project, but also within the wider context of professionals involved in the social inclusion and reintegration of young people at risk. Their role is to perform functions similar to those generally associated with auxiliary school staff, but have developed, over the years, a particular awareness and sensitivity which, in Chance, takes on a crucial importance. These professionals contribute to the development of the relational and life skills of young people and also provide a significant contribution to the development of learning more directly linked to academic work.
