AbstractThe idea that participation in sport builds character is a long-standing one. Advocates of sport participation believe that sport provides an appropriate context for the learning of social skills such as cooperation and the development of prosocial behavior (Weiss, Smith, & Stuntz, 2008). Research in sport regarding character development has suggested that sport can build character, but only if coaches and sport administrators implement specific strategies to do so. While character development is not an inherent consequence of sport participation, there is considerable evidence that with deliberate efforts, by coaches and other adults, an environment that fosters the development of character in young athletes can be created. By challenging athletes to be a positive force on a team, coaches can help athletes to develop good character including ethical values such as respect, responsibility, honesty, fairness, and compassion. With the development of these values, the seemingly negative culture surrounding the sport environment might be changed, resulting in more positive experiences for all involved. (ERIC).
