Abstract | Colleges have spent years trying to make their campuses as sustainable as possible, in part to mitigate the effects of global warming. But few of them have strategies to adapt to those effects as they happen. This summer, the most widespread drought in decades, coupled with extensive wildfires and hurricanes, has some administrators thinking about the modifications they may need to make--and not only at coastal campuses vulnerable to a rise in sea level. Those officials face a number of obstacles in coming to grips with the realities of global warming, not least balancing short-term distractions and cost concerns against the need to make concrete, long-term plans. Many scientists say it is too late to reverse or moderate global warming, yet few institutions are focusing on how they will continue operating under new environmental conditions, according to a 2011 report issued by Second Nature, a leading sustainability organization that focuses on higher education. Campuses that wait to figure out how to adapt will find that their options are more costly. Administrators usually adapt to global warming only after a college has felt its effects firsthand.
