AbstractTeenagers love being social, and Web 2.0 technologies have provided students with new avenues to mingle. Although many teachers may view Web 2.0 technologies (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, blogs, wikis, Nings) as a distraction from homework and a potential danger zone in the classroom, it would be negligent for them to ignore the ramifications of their students' "Facebook mentality" on the learning that takes place under their care. If they want to engage them, teachers need to meet them where they are. They need to create bridges between the school's traditional curriculum and the students' avatars that dominate their weekends. In this article, the author describes how she has tried to build community and relevance in her sophomore English classes by using a wiki to facilitate digital literature circles. Specific assignments, assessments, and suggestions are also discussed. (Contains 3 figures.) (ERIC).
