Abstract	During the past several years, school district personnel have faced an arduous task of convincing a local electorate--including those who are not directly associated with local schools--to increase its own tax rate. Convincing demographic groups that have a vital interest in improving school facilities can be an easier task. Parents who want to see their children learn in well-constructed classrooms and race to victory on stellar eight-lane tracks with fans rooting them on from pristine bleachers are more likely to support a facility referendum. Some individuals who do not associate with the schools daily might support a district's financial requests, so targeting those constituents before a bond referendum can lead to success at election time. One of those groups that is often neglected yet is critically important to a school community's success is senior citizens. Seniors may have grandchildren in the local school system or may attend school-related events, such as athletic competitions or theater productions. Some may even volunteer in the schools. Therefore, they have an interest in the schools and can be important allies at election time. Certainly, appealing to senior citizens exclusively during a bond campaign is patronizing and will be viewed for what it is: a thinly veiled attempt to secure a positive vote. However, by establishing and nurturing a positive relationship with these citizens now and maintaining that relationship all year, school staff and students will benefit from all that seniors have to contribute to the community. When school officials extend a welcoming hand to these groups and promote opportunities to engage them in the education process, the result could be a strong, solid support base for a variety of district initiatives.
