Abstract | It is important for teachers to engage families in ways that develop a positive link between home and school. Using family literacy packs can create such a link. Originally designed for K-grade 2, the packs have been successfully adapted for young children of all ages. Early childhood teachers send children home with these packs, which include literacy materials and activities that children and families work on together. As families work with their children, the literacy materials and activities highlight young children's knowledge and learning. This helps families understand their children's literacy skills development. The packs also include a logbook so that families and teachers can record their observations, which facilitates ongoing communication, encourages parental involvement, and promotes teacher-family partnerships. This article discusses the benefits of family literacy packs and offers guidelines for teachers when creating family literacy packs. (ERIC). |
