Abstract | This article features Lafayette Academy Charter School in New Orleans, Louisiana, which was recognized by the state board of education as a "center of excellence" in 2010, and given an automatic renewal of its charter--the only school in the state to receive this honor. The school has demonstrated impressive progress: the 2007 test results showed that only 42% of fourth graders passed the LEAP test. Each successive year, however, has seen a growth in performance of up to 20%, and in 2010 and again in 2011, 100% of the fourth graders passed that high-stakes test. Lafayette Academy is committed to forging and sustaining partnerships with community organizations to change the lives of the students and their families. In pursuit of this goal, the school and the Choice Foundation, a nonprofit corporation, to promote school choice issues in Louisiana, have established strong partnerships with more than 35 community agencies to focus on two specific nonacademic areas: student health services (social, medical, and physical) and volunteer services.
