AbstractThe 2012 MetLife Foundation-NASSP Breakthrough Schools are outstanding examples of how determined and focused leaders create and sustain school improvement. The schools are places of strategic decision making where dedicated adults demonstrate their conviction that every student can and will achieve. Each of the schools demonstrates the efficacy of the guiding principles for school renewal found in NASSP's "Breaking Ranks" series. The keystones of "Breaking Ranks" fall into three core areas: (1) collaborative leadership, including professional learning communities and strategic use of data; (2) personalization of the school environment so that every student feels connected to his or her learning; and (3) curriculum, instruction, and assessment that are aligned with state and local standards. All of the 2012 Breakthrough Schools have fully integrated Breaking Ranks concepts into their operational practices, making it difficult to discern which came first in the cycle of success. What isn't hard to determine is that those operational practices have been successful largely because of the collaborative workings of the schools. Collaboration--working together toward a common goal--has been integral to the planning, decision-making, and problem-solving processes in all the schools. Each school formulated the collaborative practices specific to its school environment on the basis of current practice and the collective desire for improvement. (ERIC).
