Abstract | As researchers and science writers, the authors are always pleased when anyone takes enough interest in their work, but this time it was especially pleasing to have inspired Beets to comment on it (Beets, 2010)! The focus of his commentary is "Expected Values for Pedometer-Determined Physical Activity in Youth" (Tudor-Locke, McClain, Hart, Sisson, & Washington, 2009). As the authors indicated in that article, expected values are normative or benchmark values necessary for interpretation and comparison purposes; their use does not imply what young people "should be" doing. In this response, the authors emphasize that expected values should not be considered prescriptive by any means. They agree, however, that as more studies are added to the pedometer literature, gaps in their understanding can be filled, and such estimates further refined. (ERIC). |
