Abstract | In this article, the authors look at James Moffett's influence on "English Journal". With the 1968 publication of his companion volumes--"Teaching the Universe of Discourse," which provided the theoretical underpinnings of his practice-oriented, and "A Student-Centered Language Arts Curriculum"--James Moffett (1929-96) became a major influence on the teaching of secondary English in the English-speaking world. One can think of no more fitting an occasion or outlet for examining his legacy than the 100th anniversary of "English Journal," the NCTE journal dedicated to the work of secondary classroom teachers. In this article, the authors examine how Moffett's work has influenced conversations conducted in "English Journal" (EJ) over almost four decades. (Contains 4 notes.) (ERIC). |
