AbstractShades of Pink study describes how six preschoolers and their teacher engaged in a collaborative learning project through which they learned about the shades of a color--in this case, pink. As the children learned through experimenting and discussing their theories, they represented ideas using art as a tool for discovery and learning. The study was conducted in a college laboratory school's child care center in British Columbia, Canada. The center's mission is based on the fundamental philosophy of Reggio Emilia preschools and infant-toddler centers--every child is creative and full of potential and has the desire and right to make meaning within a context of rich relationships. Within the Reggio Emilia approach, art has a broader purpose beyond sensory exploration and self-expression--it plays a major role as one of children's many expressive languages. The study demonstrates that during art activities, children test their theories, interact with materials and people and make meaning from these interactions, and at the same time, become sensitive to the environment around them.
