AbstractThis article describes the contributions in this special issue, which brings together contributions that explore the varied ways in which science is practiced, managed, contested, and abandoned in corporate settings. From these empirical contributions, the authors aim to provoke reflection on the usefulness of the demarcations between for-profit and nonprofit inquiry. They hope to provoke fresh theorizing about how corporate science differs from and how it resembles nonprofit science, how scientists collaborate within firms and across industries, how corporate science is situated and operates within firms and industries, and the unique methodological challenges of studying corporations. Academic science and corporate science are alike in that truths are not simply discovered, but must be made and implemented. However, academic science and corporate science differ in their ways of supporting, implementing, valuing, and discarding claims and objects. (Contains 1 figure.) (ERIC).
