Abstract | Excellent teachers in early childhood programs are intentional in all they do with and for children. They do not assume that children's development will happen without support, encouragement, and scaffolding or without presenting appropriate challenges for the children. Intentionality is a key message in "Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children from Birth through Age 8" (Copple & Bredekamp 2009). Intentionality can also be applied to staff development and supervision. A director or supervisor should be purposeful in planning opportunities for staff to reflect about their classroom practices. This article tells the story of intentionality in planning and teaching with children and with teachers at St. Saviour's Church Nursery School in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. (ERIC). |
