Abstract | It is widely recognised that securing employment on release from prison is a significant factor in reducing the chances of an individual re-offending. In the current economic climate where 25 percent of men under the age of 25 are unemployed and total unemployment is running at 2.7 million, the challenge for ex-offenders entering the workplace is even tougher. Prison education is a vital part of the journey to make people work-ready and to develop both hard and soft employability skills. As such, it is important that, as well as meeting the needs of individual learners, the education provision available in prison also meets the needs of employers. Most employers would like to employ ex-offenders, but often lack confidence in the education they receive in prison. In this article, the author discusses the need to raise awareness of prison education and the attributes offenders can bring to the workforce. (ERIC). |
