Abstract | In this article, the author writes a commentary about an article that she wrote with Marcia McCoy (Muehlenhard & McCoy, 1991). In that article, they "tested the hypothesis that the sexual double standard, which gives more sexual freedom to men than to women, might in some situations make women reluctant to acknowledge their desire for sexual intercourse." More specifically, they examined the context of situations in which women wanted and intended to engage in sexual intercourse but indicated that they did not--indicating no but meaning yes. Controversy can accompany research on sensitive topics. However the author concludes that despite the difficulties, reflecting on our own assumptions and behavior is an essential component of feminist scholarship, and attending to these issues can help inform the study of the psychology of women for years to come.
