AbstractReductionistic, misogynistic, and heterosexist views of women's bodies have been often expressed and widely shared, and psychology has not been immune to those views. Second-wave feminist psychologists had plenty of work to do to normalize and destigmatize women's bodies and to point out that cultural pressures, social constructions, and neurochemical processes had as much, or more, to do with women's mental health than their reproductive status did. In this article, the author provides an overview of the articles in the "Psychology of Women Quarterly" ("PWQ") anniversary section (originally published between 1988 and 1997) which focus on the physical body (broadly inclusive of sexuality, appearance, and health behavior) and its connection to mental health, safety, and well-being.
