Abstract | Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915) was an efficiency expert whose concerns were less about avoiding worker fatigue and more about increasing profit margins by any means necessary. Taylor was devoted to finding the One Best Way to carry out a task and then training workers to do that task unvaryingly; attempts by employees to improve their own performance or exceed quotas were not acceptable. To make a long story short, Taylor loved Henry Ford's automobile production lines and would probably be overjoyed with today's production line robots, the only workers whose performance could "live" up to his standards. Another aspect of Taylorian management, one that likely has more influence today than most of his other teachings, is the idea of dividing all relevant tasks into a large number of individual jobs, with each worker repeating one or at most a few tasks, hundreds of times per hour. In this article, the author addresses this aspect of Taylor's approach to management. The idea of standing in a production line and receiving a nut and a bolt every ten seconds, with the requirement to thread the nut on the bolt and toss them into a bin 2880 times in an eight-hour shift, would be pure Taylorism. It is all about manipulating widgets in the most efficient way possible. (ERIC). |
