Abstract | Much like the MetLife Foundation-NASSP Breakthrough Schools that came before them, the honoree schools this year are remarkable. In addition to offering students safe and challenging learning environments, the schools also afford their adult members a respectful, collaborative place to work and grow, and they give their diverse communities an assurance of student success. From all the schools' stories, two significant commonalities emerge that can be replicated by any school that wishes to improve student outcomes. The first is an adherence to the guiding principles for school renewal found in "Breaking Ranks," "Breaking Ranks II," and "Breaking Ranks in the Middle." The keystones of "Breaking Ranks" fall into three core areas: (1) collaborative leadership, including professional learning communities and strategic use of data; (2) personalization of the school environment so that every student feels connected to his or her learning; and (3) curriculum, instruction, and assessment that are aligned with state and local standards. The 2011 Breakthrough Schools are commended for their successful implementation of those concepts. The second commonality is the principals' leadership strength. Flexibility, bolstered by continual, targeted professional development, is a key to sustained success, according to these master principals. It is evident from even a cursory look at the 2011 MetLife Foundation-NASSP Breakthrough Schools that their accomplishments include several essential components: (1) a strong commitment to a specific value system; (2) a passion for the work to be done each day; and (3) an eagerness not only to teach but also to be taught--all of which are made easier in diverse, challenging middle level and high schools when accompanied by a high degree of flexibility among school leaders.
