AbstractGiven the research about the decrease in age of coming out and the established need for support during young adolescents' sexual development, it is clear that programming targeted to middle grades LGBTQ youth is both essential and widely lacking. Interventions such as staff development and training, in-class curriculum, support groups, after-school clubs, and awareness events have the promise to improve the climate for LGBTQ youth in middle grades schools and, thereby, their educational and social success. The recent barrage of stories in the news media reflects the consequences of unaddressed homophobic bullying in school. This lack of responsiveness gives disrespectful behavior permission to continue. Staff training can help to normalize issues of teen sexuality and provide teachers with intervention tools and age-appropriate language. An Out for Equity program in Minnesota conducted a three-year evaluation of interventions aimed at decreasing homophobia and improving the learning environment for LGBTQ students in middle school. This article provides an overview of project activities and a qualitative analysis of project outcomes. (Contains 2 figures.) (ERIC).
