Abstract	Goals of cultural competence are commonly described as creation of a health care system and workforce capable of delivering high-quality care to all patients regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, or language. While this "system" is made up of individuals, it also has a life of its own, as with all institutions. In this chapter, the authors explore the specific contributions of the field of adult education to the creation of health systems that contribute to the equal treatment of all individuals and communities at the level of individual knowledge, skills, and attitudes, as well as institutional policies and procedures. They provide a case study of a recent cultural competency curriculum developed by the University of California Davis that used common adult education theoretical and methodological frameworks focused on both individual and systemic change.
