Abstract | A high-quality field experience is a fundamental part of early childhood teacher preparation where teachers-in-training observe, develop, and practice critical teaching skills and dispositions in early childhood classrooms. Many teachers welcome extra assistance in the classroom but do not know how to provide hands-on training to aspiring early childhood teachers. This article provides early childhood classroom teachers (as well as program administrators who assist in the placement of preservice teachers) with suggestions and insights for effectively working with preservice teachers. These suggestions are appropriate for cooperating teachers who work with preservice teachers in a variety of settings serving children from birth to age eight, ranging from a practicum in which the student spends only a few days engaged in an early childhood classroom to a semester of full-time student teaching.
