Abstract | The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Utah State University offers two courses for preservice secondary school mathematics teachers that complement each other in working toward a vision for school mathematics in which "all students have access to high-quality, engaging mathematics instruction." Through these courses, students engage in lessons on mathematics topics relevant to the secondary school curriculum while learning pedagogical principles and becoming familiar with technology for teaching. They develop as reflective practitioners through extensive field experience and collaboration with teacher colleagues before beginning their student teaching. The courses--Capstone Mathematics, Statistics, and Technology for Teachers and Methods for Secondary Mathematics Teaching--have distinct goals. The first is a mathematics content and technology course, while the second is primarily a pedagogy course. Nevertheless, they are mutually supportive in achieving the goals for preservice teachers. After a brief introduction to the courses, the authors describe activities from each that illustrate how investigating mathematical questions leads to the development of technological and pedagogical expertise and how working on these skills helps students learn relevant mathematics content more deeply. Together the two courses help students grow as teachers. (ERIC). |
