AbstractThe analysis of the nature of youth extremism has shown that there is a connection between the extremist tendency ["ekstremal'nost'"] that is an essential property of young people, on the one hand, and extremist manifestations that come about in that community under certain conditions. These conditions include external ones (the economic, political, and social conditions characteristic of the life and activity of that social group) and internal ones that have to do with the characteristics of the group's social organization and are manifested in their consciousness and behavior. The analysis showed that social, age, and gender groups of young people are different in regard to the level of the extremist tendency of their consciousness. For this reason, the extremist manifestations among them may be different even where the external conditions are the same. On the other hand, different conditions can produce extremism in certain groups and not have an influence on other groups. In other words, between the external and the internal conditions that mediate the way an extremist tendency may grow into extremism there is a kind of mediator that regulates the process. It is the self-organization of young people that constitutes that mediator. The most widely prevalent form of that self-organization consists of various kinds of youth associations that represent "independent and primarily spontaneous actions on the part of informal groups of young people, associations that serve to enhance and reinforce the resources of their group identity (subcultural, social protest, ethnocultural identity, and so on)." This article looks at the characteristics of young people's self-organization, the effect that the mechanism of self-organization has in the process of the emergence of various forms of extremist manifestations, or their localization in the youth community. (Contains 5 tables and 2 notes.) [This article was translated by Kim Braithwaite.] (ERIC).
