Abstract | In today's world, the developments being experienced in geography education are focusing on issues like the following: integrating technology into geography courses, placing a comprehensive and integrative perspective regarding geography into the curriculum, stressing independent learning and team-learning simultaneously, educating students to ensure that they are more sensitive to their environment and the society that they live in, and competing with the rest of the world in terms of how geography can be used to find long-term solutions to the problems the globe is facing. From this viewpoint, to reveal the weaknesses and strengths of the geography educational system in Turkey is vital in order to be able to compare geographic teaching and learning with the rest of the world from the perspective of the new developments mentioned above. In this study, the current context of geographic education in Turkey, alongside the perception of geography, geography curricula and teaching methods were investigated from the global and national points of view. At the same time, the international and national trends in geography education were studied from a comparative perspective to find out the steps that must be undertaken in the future.
