AbstractEMARC, Inc. is a Massachusetts based nonprofit organization founded by family members in 1954 that provides support to individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. This article describes EMARC's Life Choices Program which offers participants the opportunity to receive individualized attention in small groups through the program's four tracks--Personal Growth, Health and Wellness, Creative Expressions and Independent Living Skills. The primary mission of Life Choices is to ensure that people with developmental disabilities and their families are valued, respected and offered opportunities to direct their own lives. Life Choices was created as a direct result of family member, educator, and self-advocate concerns about their next step after high school and their discontentment with the service options that existed. There were several concerns that EMARC's Leadership Team addressed through the program inception: (1) a more contemporary approach to services; (2) smaller ratios for active learning; (3) peer grouping; (4) fun; (5) community involvement; (6) similarity to college; (7) curricula based on participants interests; (8) wellness education; (9) continuum of skill development; and (10) valued adult roles. For many families and self advocates, the Life Choices program offers participants a dynamic, contemporary and relevant approach to the teaching of healthy lifestyle choices. (ERIC).
