Abstract	This article presents the story of Chad Roberts of Canton, Georgia, who is proving himself a promising employee day by day. He works several jobs in increments of up to 90 minutes. Some days, he completes bulk mailings at a law firm. On others, he's at local restaurants stocking the wait staff stations with supplies. The community-based vocational instruction is a huge step for Chad, 18, because he usually prefers life without change, interaction, waiting or commotion, workplace realities that people would probably rather avoid at times. But Chad is a trooper, whether the task at hand is running a postage machine (probably his favorite) or watering plants, which he practices in his horticulture class. His schedule also includes jobs in various offices, the lost-and-found and library at Cherokee High School, where he takes life skills classes and is on the team of students with cognitive challenges who run a coffee shop as he prepares to join the workforce in a few years. His goal is a steady job with more hours. By all accounts, Chad evidently likes working, though it's hard for him to say so. His autism leaves him virtually non-verbal and significantly affects the way he relates to the world. He has also struggled with bipolar disorder and pica, a condition commonly causing children with developmental disabilities to crave and eat inedible substances like leaves or paper, Chad's frequent choices.
