Abstract | The Academy of Urban Learning is a five-year-old charter school in Denver, Colorado, that has grown to serve about 100 high school students. Started by entrepreneur and U.S. Rep. Jared Polis to serve homeless youth, the school attempts to provide wraparound services to students with a variety of needs. In this article, the author describes how years of listening to high school students helps educators at the Academy of Urban Learning build skills in communicating with humanity and empathy. He also discusses the changes in the school's policies and practices which now reflect a more supportive atmosphere. (ERIC). |
