AbstractThe Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) has a long history of data collection, environmental scanning, and trends analysis. Its most recent work, "Futures Thinking for Academic Librarians," uses a 15-year horizon to look beyond the worries of the current economic cycle and the short-term future in order to anticipate the changing context within which academic libraries will operate in the future. ACRL developed 26 possible future scenarios based on current trends and asked over 400 academic librarians to describe their expectations regarding the probability, impact, speed, and threat/opportunity potential of each scenario. Given the context-dependent nature of the responses to the scenarios, libraries will likely move towards the future in a variety of ways. Some libraries might prepare for a widening digital divide in the student population by creating technology-training workshops and expanding technology-loan programs. Others may focus their training programs on faculty research and on supporting faculty who are navigating the waters of digital scholarship and publishing outlets. (Contains 5 resources.) (ERIC).
