AbstractThe author spent his two superintendencies perfecting a collaborative leadership concept known as "the superintendency." This concept recognized that significant change and positive, continuous improvement required long-term, concentrated attention rather than a few years of frantic activity. While the "superintendency" contributes to an effective, high-quality leadership team, individual members are granted an optimum amount of autonomy and authority to lead in their functional areas. However, in this arrangement, the superintendent remains the one individual in the school district that is ultimately accountable to the board. Another benefit of this model is that it provides the school board with an in-house pool of prospective superintendent or CEO candidates for future openings, as the members of the "superintendency" are highly qualified and prepared to lead. The insights and experiences of those who lived this model during Omotani's tenure as superintendent in two school systems--West Des Moines Community Schools in Iowa and Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools on Long Island--can best illustrate this unique approach to school system leadership.
