Abstract | This essay recounts the authors' experiences as community college faculty members in a learning community (LC) linking first-year composition with a class in life-career planning and development. The authors begin with a learning community story shared recently over drinks with a group of community college English teachers. They use the story to make two related yet distinct points. The first point is that learning community models are significant to community college teaching and, even more specifically, to the teaching of English. The second point the authors draw from a teacher's experiences: a small but growing body of research suggests that the teacher's experience with LCs is more common than LC advocates had suspected. Students "enjoy" learning communities. The authors outline five recommendations and lessons learned for English faculty members as well as suggestions for those who might be planning learning communities at their respective campuses.
