AbstractThe film "No Impact Man" tells the story of 40-something Colin Beavan, his wife Michelle Conlin, their 2-year-old daughter Isabella, and dog Frankie and their decision to go "off the grid" in an effort to have no personal net impact on the environment for a year while living in New York City. The film highlights the family's struggles to stay true to their no net impact plan as they become more and more aware of the throwaway, self-indulgent lifestyle that Americans have come to take for granted. Also, as in all feel-good movies, it reveals a silver lining. For the Beavan-Conlin family, that included deeper connections to others and to the environment, physically (and perhaps mentally) healthier lifestyles, and a more fulfilled and positive sense of purpose and self. The author is interested in Beavan's ecological approach that includes his attention to identities, his uses of digital literacies and pop culture, his coupling of Web 1.0 and 2.0 technologies, and his engagement in participatory culture to share his story with a larger audience. In this article, the author analyzes Beavan's methods for sharing his environmental message, and connects those to potential digital literacy projects in schools to illustrate that by using an ecological approach, small changes can actually have a big impact on literacy learning for the betterment of students and teachers--and ultimately the environment.
