Abstract | System offices for community college institutional research differ in many ways from campus offices for community college institutional research. The other chapters in this volume describe salient characteristics of system IR offices, but many readers may want to see a direct comparison of system IR offices to campus IR offices in the community college sector. Fortunately, the author had a chance to speak with an institutional researcher who has spent years working at both kinds of office. This article presents an interview with William Hamre, who worked in the system office for the California community colleges as a retired annuitant during the spring of 2010. In this interview, Hamre gives an up-close account of his life in these two work environments and offers his observations about the similarities and differences between a system office and a college office for institutional research.
