Abstract | Several definitions of service learning exist. For this initiative, the authors used Torres and Sinton's (2000) definition that students are learning about social issues and applying new knowledge to real problems in their communities. This project entailed a partnership of committed citizens of different groups (middle, secondary, and university level FCS teachers and students and community members) to address a real need in an international context. The initiative was aimed at promoting global citizenship by taking local action on a global issue: orphaned school-aged children's inability to access educational resources in a post-conflict country--Rwanda. This article reports the conceptualization, development, implementation, and sustainability of this service learning project. (Contains 2 figures.) (ERIC). |
