Abstract	Two years ago John Denham launched a consultation into the future of informal adult learning. He was taken aback by the volume and quality of the responses he received. Those responses helped to generate last year's White Paper, "The Learning Revolution," which six government departments supported. Since the launch of "The Learning Revolution," Tom Schuller and David Watson's seminal report, "Learning Through Life," has been published. It presents the findings of the Inquiry into the Future for Lifelong Learning and makes a compelling case for adult learning's public value. Its publication followed an equally seminal Foresight report by the Government's Chief Scientific Adviser on mental capital and wellbeing in which he identified the value of boosting brain power in young and old and learning through life as ways in which people can live longer, more independently and with a greater quality of life. When the case for the public value of lifelong learning and its impact across other strands of public policy is made so powerfully in this way by others, it is important that one does all he/she can to amplify the messages. With a general election looming and, with it, the prospect of savage cuts to public sector funding, the author urges advocates of lifelong learning to make their voices heard to ensure the next government recognises the value of their work.
