AbstractCoaching occurs when one professional works closely with another professional to increase productivity or to meet a common outcome. For a coach or mentor to be successful, the teacher must believe in the expertise the coach espouses, and the coach must believe in the teacher's abilities. Through "reflective coaching," teachers and coaches collaborate to examine the effectiveness of the teacher's classroom practices and to make decisions regarding change. With these goals in mind, Kari, a classroom teacher, and the author, Kari's coach of two years, interviewed one another about the coaching experience from each of their perspectives as an evaluation of and follow-up to their weekly visits and collaboration Interview sections of this article present their reflections on four aspects of the coaching process: beginning the partnership, Kari's view of her classroom practices, teaching through classroom routines, and relationship building. Each section of questions and answers concludes with discussion and research supporting the approach taken during the coaching partnership.
