AbstractIn the ethnosociological literature, the term "ethnic tolerance" is interpreted as a specific trait of the national character of some particular people, its mentality, a trait that is oriented toward tolerance, harmony, and a willingness to deal constructively with any problems that arise in interethnic relations. The variegated processes of interethnic relations in today's Russia make it essential to study problems of ethnic tolerance, especially in the "youth community". This paper presents a study titled "The Problem of Interethnic Tolerance as Perceived by the Young People of Tula Oblast" that was carried out by the "Shans" [Chances] Center for Social and Psychological Assistance to Young People and the Committee for Youth Policy. Its purpose was to study the current state and dynamics of young people's attitudes toward interethnic relations. The results of the survey have shown which representatives of which national and ethnic groups the young people express sympathy or antipathy toward. Inasmuch as ethnic tolerance, as a rule, is manifested directly in the course of interethnic contacts, very often the level of that tolerance depends on the degree of intensity of these contacts, and it is different in each specific case. The authors found that most young people in Tula are tolerant toward representatives of a different nationality as acquaintances and friends. In conclusion the authors emphasize that the array of problems relating to ethnic tolerance remains a topical and urgent one, and requires further study. (ERIC).
