AbstractMany authors suggest that incorporating the history of mathematics in the classroom leads to a heightened awareness and appreciation of mathematics, aids in looking at problems from a different perspective, and helps students understand why mathematics is important. Introducing students to the history of mathematics provides them with a chance to see connections between subjects. Perhaps by incorporating the history of mathematics, it will inspire students to explore mathematical connections within various disciplines. In addition, a brief study of history may alleviate students' fears and help them see that some mathematical concepts were not conquered overnight. This may help students realize that over time they too will understand concepts. This article examines what effect incorporating history had on an Algebra II Honors course. It includes a brief review of research, analysis of ways to incorporate history of mathematics into the classroom, examples of methods used in the classroom, and the effect this had on student and teacher learning and attitudes.
