Abstract | Problems of the family affect every individual. Problems have an impact on a variety of different social groups and strata, work collectives and neighborhood communities, young people, adults, children, the aged, and so on. The family's sense of well-being and the processes that affect its functioning can also hardly fail to be of concern to society and the state, since the ability of that social institution is linked directly to the security of society and to the prospects of the nation's development. S.V. Darmodekhin distinguishes two basic groups of problems that the family confronts. The first group includes general social problems characteristic of the whole population, of all individuals. The second group is specific, reflecting the institutional content of the family's life and activity. A sociological survey was devoted to the study of the social problem of today's family in which the basis of the survey consisted of the cities and rural settlements of Cheliabinsk oblast. This article discusses the results of the survey which show that the financial and economic crisis in Russia has had a strong impact on family life, and that the social problems of the family have worsened in recently years.
