Abstract | Adult learners of English as a second language attend classes with various goals in mind with the most common being gainful employment. To obtain their goals, these learners must successfully acquire language and literacy in English. This can be a daunting task for English language learners as well as their teachers. Goal-oriented adult learners may be interested in learning to read in English and highly motivated to read; yet, they still require skillful and informed instruction. This literacy-based article addresses text comprehension, which is the culmination of all reading engagements. The article describes a threefold reading framework, which is accompanied by instructional principles and research-based strategies known to enhance text comprehension for English language learners.
