AbstractThe authors argue for closer collaboration between public schools and the public child welfare system, on behalf of children placed at risk, with respect to whether they will do as well in school as their abilities suggest they might, all else being equal. The need for closer collaboration is tied to two developments affecting schools and the child welfare system. To deepen the readers' understanding of how risk and child well-being converge in the context of schools, this chapter focuses on child maltreatment and foster care placement, the principle responsibilities of the child welfare system. This chapter has three primary sections, each of which is intended to reinforce the notion that greater awareness of maltreatment, placement into foster care, and the educational challenges of dually involved children is important to schools and the public child welfare system from their respective policy, practice, and research perspectives. (Contains 6 notes, 3 tables, and 2 figures.) (ERIC).
