Abstract | With all the current discussion on teacher effectiveness, this author believes that superintendents are compelled to think more deeply about the supports teachers need to be effective in successfully fulfilling their responsibilities. Given the increased and competing demands on their time to meet school- and district-level priorities while focusing on individual student needs, they face a myriad of challenges. The greatest challenge is that they need to be proficient in all knowledge and skills from the first moment they enter the classroom. In this article, the author shares her realizations about teacher effectiveness after having worked with new teacher development as a former special education director, and describes her journey of creating opportunities for new special education teachers to succeed while meeting their daily challenges.
